Clash of Cultures

I heard Kit Bond the Republican Senator from Missouri paraphrase this quote on the radio this morning in regards to the clash of western civilization and the Islamic world.

"The supposed ‘clash of civilizations’ is in reality nothing more than a manifestation of mutual ignorance..." ~Luis Monreal

I very much agree and would extend that to most clashes between humans in general are based on mutual ignorance. IMO, understanding is the road to peace.

That mutual ignorance may have been unavoidable in the past, but it's inexcusable in the age of the WorldWideWeb and global economic interdependence. However, deliberate ignorance and fear of "the others" is perpetuated by many religious and political traditions, as a way of controlling the loyalty of the masses.

i agree with you to a point, but since we can't always understand each other, tolerance should be what you fall back on at an impasse.

Ignorance will never go away. It's part of being human.
