September was globally the second hottest on record.

Measured Land and Ocean Temperatures for September

NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) has just released their surface temperature (not satellite measured) anomaly data for the month of September 2009.

According to GISS, September 2009 was the second warmest September (land/ocean combined) on record globally, as the global temperature anomaly was +.65 C or +1.17 F. September of 2005 was the warmest on record with an anomaly of +.67 C or +1.21 F.

The chart below shows the September 2009 temperature anomalies across the globe in degrees C. above or below normal.

Here is an updated graph (as of 10/6/09) of the GISS global land/ocean temperature index anomaly going back to 1880.

FYI

There is an article in the current Skeptical Inquirer magazine [March/April 2010] entitled : DISINFORMATION ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING. It gives responses to ten bogus arguments from GW deniers. Number 10 discusses the significance of the recent email coverup in England.

Another article is entitled CLIMATE DENIALISM, and gives some info on the special interests supporting the media concept that there is a controversy among climate scientists.

These articles may be available online after this issue is superceded at the newsstands.

Thanks for the heads-up.

2009: Second Warmest Year on Record; End of Warmest Decade

2009 was tied for the second warmest year in the modern record, a new NASA analysis of global surface temperature shows. The analysis, conducted by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, also shows that in the Southern Hemisphere, 2009 was the warmest year since modern records began in 1880.

Although 2008 was the coolest year of the decade, due to strong cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean, 2009 saw a return to near-record global temperatures. The past year was only a fraction of a degree cooler than 2005, the warmest year on record, and tied with a cluster of other years — 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2007 1998 and 2007 — as the second warmest year since recordkeeping began...

Just a quick update on the state of the global climate.

Quote :
Global Highlights
  • The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for July 2010 was the second warmest on record, behind 1998, at 16.5°C (61.6F), which is 0.66°C (1.19°F) above the 20th century average of 15.8°C (60.4°F).

  • The July worldwide land surface temperature was 1.03°C (1.85°F) above the 20th century average of 14.3°C (57.8°F)—the warmest July on record.

  • The worldwide ocean surface temperature was 0.54°C (0.97°F) above the 20th century average of 16.4°C (61.5°F) and the fifth warmest July on record. The warmth was most pronounced in the Atlantic Ocean.

  • La Niña conditions developed during July 2010, as sea surface temperatures (SST) continued to drop across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, La Niña is expected to strengthen and last through the Northern Hemisphere winter 2010-2011.

  • For the year-to-date, the global combined land and ocean surface temperature of 14.5°C (58.1°F) was the warmest January-July period on record. This value is 0.68°C (1.22°F) above the 20th century average.

And another update for September.

Quote :
Global Highlights
  • The combined global land and ocean surface temperature for September 2010 was 0.50°C (0.90°F) above the 20th century average of 15.0°C (59.0°F) and tied with 1998 as the eighth warmest on record. September 2005 is the warmest September on record.

  • The September worldwide land surface temperature was 0.66°C (1.19°F) above the 20th century average of 12.0°C (53.6°F)—the ninth warmest September on record.

  • The September worldwide ocean surface temperature was 0.44°C (0.79°F) above the 20th century average of 16.2°C (61.1°F) and tied with 1998 and 2008 as the ninth warmest September on record.

  • For January–September 2010, the global combined land and ocean surface temperature was 0.65°C (1.17°F) above the 20th century average of 14.1°C (57.5°F) and tied with 1998 as the warmest January–September period on record.

  • The global average land surface temperature for the period January–September was the second warmest on record, behind 2007.

  • The global average ocean surface temperature for the period January–September was also the second warmest on record, behind 1998.

For November...

Quote :
Global Highlights
•The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for November 2010 was 0.69°C (1.24°F) above the 20th century average of 12.9°C (55.2°F). This was the second warmest such period on record. 2004 was the warmest November on record.

•The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for fall (September–November) 2010 was the sixth warmest on record for the season, 0.58°C (1.04°F) above the 20th century average of 14.0°C (57.1°F).

For the 2010 year-to-date (January–November), the combined global land and ocean surface temperature was 0.64°C (1.15°F) above the 20th century average—the warmest such period since records began in 1880.

•The November 2010 Northern Hemisphere land and ocean surface temperature was the warmest November on record, while the Southern Hemisphere land and ocean surface temperature was the 13th warmest November on record.

•The November 2010 global land surface temperature was the warmest on record, at 1.52°C (2.74°F) above the 20th century average, while the November global ocean temperature tied with 1987 and 2008 as the tenth warmest on record, at 0.39°C (0.70°F) above average.

•The January–November 2010 Northern Hemisphere land surface temperature was the second warmest such period on record, while the Southern Hemisphere was the fourth warmest on record.

And for the year...
Quote :
Global Highlights

  • For 2010, the combined global land and ocean surface temperature tied with 2005 as the warmest such period on record, at 0.62°C (1.12°F) above the 20th century average of 13.9°C (57.0°F). 1998 is the third warmest year-to-date on record, at 0.60°C (1.08°F) above the 20th century average.

  • The 2010 Northern Hemisphere combined global land and ocean surface temperature was the warmest year on record, at 0.73°C (1.31°F) above the 20th century average. The 2010 Southern Hemisphere combined global land and ocean surface temperature was the sixth warmest year on record, at 0.51°C (0.92°F) above the 20th century average.

  • The global land surface temperature for 2010 tied with 2005 as the second warmest on record, at 0.96°C (1.73°F) above the 20th century average. The warmest such period on record occurred in 2007, at 0.99°C (1.78°F) above the 20th century average.

  • The global ocean surface temperature for 2010 tied with 2005 as the third warmest on record, at 0.49°C (0.88°F) above the 20th century average.

  • n 2010 there was a dramatic shift in the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which influences temperature and precipitation patterns around the world. A moderate-to-strong El Niño at the beginning of the year transitioned to La Niña conditions by July. At the end of November, La Niña was moderate-to-strong.
Note that even though it was one of the warmest years on record globally, there were regions that saw lower than average temperatures.
Global Temperature Update 201001-201012

For what it's worth, due to La Nina conditions that started to develop in the middle of last year, I expect 2011 to be cooler than 2010.

The graphs above are very revealing about the current trends in climate & environment changes. But the latest National Geographic magazine has a feature article on how those present changes will be recorded in the future geological record. a million years hence. Some geologists think we are in the early stages of a new geological era, which they are calling the "Anthropocene". The name indicates that humans are the primary change agents in this new epoch. Most former "cenes" were marked by signs of sudden mass extinctions of living organisms, and were usually caused by events such as meteor impacts and ice ages. The beginning of the Anthropocene though, may be marked by the start of the Industrial Age. The article is not alarmist in tone, but it does present the Global Warming debate from a new perspective.

Unfortunately for many simply stating the scientific facts about climate change is enough to get branded with the title of alarmist.

From what I hear Richard Muller's been getting trashed by the "skeptic" community since he released his findings.
